World without tigers
This week I though I will remind you all of some of the animals which thanks to our constant advancements are struggling to survive. I will mainly tell the reasons for their endangerment. I told about the frogs, today it is the turn of the tigers.
In this century alone, three sub-species of tiger were driven into extinction, including the Bali, Javan, and Caspian. Tragically, the remaining five sub-species are at risk of meeting the same fate.
These regal animals with a slender walk and the ability to hide itself smartly under dense cover are right now fighting for survival. Why? Because, first of all there is not enough dense cover of forest left for it to hide. And then there is the constant threat of onslaught by poachers. Not to forget illegal hunting for medicinal trade.
Unlike the open habitat of lions, leopards, and cheetahs, tigers prefer to live in moderately dense cover. They are solitary cats that stake out their territories by marking their area with their scent and claw markings on trees. In fact, the only time when adult tigers are in contact with each other is when they mate.
Loss, fragmentation, and degradation of forests have been a major factors in the decline of the tiger population in this century, with illegal killing playing an increasingly damaging role as tigers have become more vulnerable: no refugees remain safe from human penetration. Habitat loss remains a grave danger for the tiger, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. In countries like India where there is a human population problem, people are always looking for more room, which infringes on the tiger habitat. Once people reside close to tigers, they transform the ecological system with cattle, crops, et cetera, which in turn harms the tigers.
A world without tigers would mean an ecological imbalance as they are the highest in the chain and are predators. An over population of the grazing animals, and jut the name Tiger Woods known to the coming generations without ever watching the real tiger in action.

The conservationists are so onto this aspect of this happening (tigers and pandas). Last week I was out on Tiger Island at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, getting up close and personal with these absolutely gorgeous fluffy little (well not so little) beasties. Ooh I could just smoochie-poopie their little paws and noses for ever... ergm .. anyeeeway, so much is being done to protect this species, I was truly encouraged by the new laws and measures being taken to save them from extinction.
Maybe we wont save them all, but since the grazers will also suffer mankinds spread into the wilderness, enough to keep some balance - especially if my new post on the Venus Project becomes a reality and we dont keep exploiting the land for profit.
I hope you get a chance to read it as it offers hope to us all.
I enjoyed this post, well written.
