World without Giant Pandas
We all love this cuddly animal and of course recognize it as the symbol of WWF. But even after its world wide popularity the giant Panda faces a future that is as bleak as all other endangered species of the world.
The reasons,
1. Low reproductive rate as they have a very short breeding season and the female just gives birth to 1-2 cubs which again face survival problems.
2. Bamboo shortage – Giant Pandas love bamboos and it is their breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Without the bamboo therefore there cannot be any food for the pandas. And bamboo groves are fast getting destroyed because of the standard reasons of urbanization.
3. Habitat destruction
4. Hunting
Today, only around 1,600 giant pandas survive on Earth..
Why is this species important?
Panda habitat is found at the top of the Yangtze Basin, an ecoregion shared by both pandas and millions of people whose ancestors have utilized the region's natural resources for millennia. The Basin is the geographic and economic heart of China, and is one of the critical regions for biodiversity conservation in the world. Its diverse habitats contain many rare, endemic and endangered animal and plant species, the best known being the giant panda. Economic benefits derived from the Yangtze Basin include tourism, subsistence fisheries and agriculture, transport, hydropower and water resources.
