World without frogs

This week I though I will remind you all of some of the animals which thanks to our constant advancements are struggling to survive. I will mainly tell the reasons for their endangerment, starting today with the frogs.

You may or may not enjoy the constant croaking of this animal during wet days, but soon there may come a time when you will actually not even hear a single croak. Most of the frog sub species are in fact very much endangered be it any part of the world.

The reasons,
1. Constant loss of wetlands due to filling for building or technical purposes
2. Acidification of lakes due to coal mining
3. Pollutes beings dumped into the water bodies, be it industrial or home garbage
4. Use of the herbicide atrazine that kill the parasitic worms and thus the frogs too which feed on them
5. Atrazine is also health wise harmful to the frogs.

In reality, according to the IUCN, as many as one third of the nearly 6,000 known amphibian species—frogs, toads, salamanders, even wormlike caecilians—are threatened with extinction. And no one knows why.

So, a world without frogs would mean,
1. No more croaking in the rains
2. Increase in the population of the insects, which are eaten by the frogs, including the parasitic worms that destroy crops.
3. Lesser food options for snakes, and invariably difficulty in its survival too.
4. Imbalance in the food chain and the ecosystem
5. No frog prince for princesses…

Frogs have been around for 190 million years and are an ancient life form. Help protect frogs by becoming involved with water quality issues in your town and area, and by learning about frogs so you can share their magic and importance. If we begin to care about one animal and try and protect them perhaps we can begin to care about the water too and protect it as well.

What a sad world it would be without frogs. We need to stop and think about what we are all doing.

exactly johnny...actually every single species in this world has some or other relevance and helps maintain the ecological balance...a world without frogs will be as bad as a world without humans....

Hi Atula,

nothing makes me sadder than this kind of thought. However, perhaps some solace in the fact that we may well all be leaving this planet behind if things dont change?

Thank God for 2013.

Nice post, beautiful picture.

Yes Lilla, It is a sad fact that we all live with. And the irony of the matter is no one except the few of us environment sensitive beings, is really bothered and worried about the fact that some day soon..we all might be leaving this planet...
