What is carbon footprint?
Everyone is talking about carbon foot print nowadays and how we need to reduce ours. But truth is, most really do not know what it is all about. Is it the carbon di oxide you emit while respiring or the co2 emitted by your vehicle? Does it have any relation with how many plants you grow in your neighborhood or is it just the kind of atmosphere you are surrounded with?
Actually it is all those things and much more.
So here is a quick and easy guide to what is a carbon footprint.
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc.
The carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse gases we individually produce and has units of tonnes (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent.
A carbon footprint is made up of the sum of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint.
The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation (e.g. car and plane). We have direct control of these.
Now that you basically understand what carbon footprint is all about, look out for the next article on how to calculate yours and how you can reduce the amount of emision so as to contribute to the action against climate change.
