How to save gardening water

If you are a garden lover like me, I am sure there is one persistent problem that you too are facing in these times of water scarcity. How to keep the plants and the garden green and healthy without wasting much water and just about having the perfect irrigation system.

Actually, it is not such a great problem. That is what I discovered after researching and finding some really cool ways to preserve water and also keep my garden green as ever.

It is all about making some intelligent choices regarding the plants you sow and the methods you use to water them.

Plant selection – You cannot grow water hungry plant like a rose in arid or dry regions. Therefore, before picking a plant, just consider the amount of rainfall your area gets and might receive in the future. This will help the plant survive better as well as save precious water, which you might have to sprinkle on the plant.

Sprinkler problems – Granted, sprinklers are a very good way to water large garden areas but did you know that most sprinklers actually waste half of the water they sprinkle. The reality is, when the sprinklers spread water from a height most of it is evaporated in a hot summer day and thus the garden doesn’t get enough water or you have to keep the sprinklers on for a prolonged period.

What can be a better option is to choose sprinklers that spread the water closer to the ground, or opt for the pipe irrigation system or the drip irrigation system that have small ducts at regular intervals that water the garden lawns evenly and seriously save tons of water.

Home-made drippers – This is something I have devised on my own. If you are not the one who has the budget to invest on a big drip irrigation system, you too can do what I have successfully tried with my hosepipe.
Just take a commonly used hosepipe for watering plants and pierce holes in the pipe at regular intervals. Now attach one end to the tap and the rest of the pipe laid carefully near the plant bed. As the water pours gushing out of the pipe, the holes help automatically irrigate all the plants without much of a fuss. Try this one out; I am sure you will thank me for the idea!

An essential thing to remember while using any kind of dripper, the home made or the manufactured is to keep checking the ducts or the holes as they tend to get clogged with time.

Use soda bottles –If you are going on a vacation, this is one tried and tested method of leaving your plants as pampered as ever while you are out. Take some used soda bottles, fill them with water and place them either upside down inside the ground near the plants, or make small holes at the bottom and leave them just like that. The garden remains irrigated throughout the day with not a single drop of water wasted or evaporated.

The perfect timing – Early morning hours or evening before sunset is the best time to water plants as this is when there is least evaporation and the soil remains damp for the maximum time.

Mulching – Mulching is adding layer of old plant material like leaves, bark, straw or even vegetable scraps on top of the soil. The benefits of mulching are immense,
 It helps save 50% or water evaporation from the soil, as the soil does not come in direct contact with the sunlight.
 It prevents weed growth
 It prevents pest infestation
 Prevents soil erosion
 Fertilizes the soil as the mulch decomposes

Rainwater harvesting – As technical as it may sound, it is practically very easy to harvest rainwater. You just have to get yourself one of the tanks available for the purpose and place it in an area where your house gets ample rainfall. This stored water can be used during the dry months and also when there is watering restriction.

Household water – The washing machine, shower, dishwasher sink, basin, bathtub, there are so many places in our homes that use water and the water is just drained out. If you can, do take time to collect the used water and then reuse it to water the plants. It would not seem a cumbersome tasks if you knew you would be saving about a gallon of water this way.

I personally, do not use the soapy water for the plants but do save the water I used to wash veggies or bath my infant and then pour the water in the pots.
