Explore the great outdoor…WALK

"It is tragic that a natural form of exercise must perforce be called a therapy today," says Dr Madhu Gupta Shastri, director of the Krishna Dutt Health Center of Yoga and Nature Cure in New Delhi, India. "But if you don't make it sound like something medically necessary, fewer people will take the trouble to walk. You get ready, slide into your car, drive to office, slump down in your chair and remain there for the rest of the day, not getting up for even a glass of water, as all your needs are being taken care of by others. Come evening and you drive back home, slump before the TV, eat and go off to sleep. Where did you actually walk?"

I repeat…when did you actually walk. Most of us nowadays have a regime much similar to that mentioned above and we really do not have time to walk. I do not call walking in the malls, supermarkets or up the stairs to your room walking because it is not helping us stay fit. Walking for us urbanites, if we really want to do some good to ourselves and the environment, should be planned in the mornings or evenings, or if possible through out the day to a certain distance without the use of any vehicle. Let me share some why, how and advantages of walking.

Why walk?
Because it is the most unique thing that any human being can do and one of the most advanced development that differentiates us from other animals. We walk on two legs, and by walking just a few miles every day you can avoid heart diseases, depression , increased stress level and inadequate or lack of sleep.

How environment is benefited?
You are not using your vehicles so it curbs the pollution level drastically.
You see a lot more of nature while walking and it helps you reconnect with the surrounding.

How to walk?
Walk at a regular speed
If you are panting with the speed you are walking in then slow down
Do not stoop, slouch or bend your neck while walking
If possible avoid talking
Walk uphill if that is possible as it is very good workout for the cardio muscles
The downhill in turn helps curb blood sugar level

See the image below for a specific posture requirement while walking for the maximum benefit,

The Big Benefits
Helps overcome depression.
Helps fight against stress and aids in relaxation.
Helps over come sleepless nights.
Helps to increase the body activity and provides flexibility.
Helps toning the body.

Once you get into the habit of walking, any distance looks short and you will be amazed how your stamina increases gradually and how wonderful you start feeling from the inside.
